New Player
Hello
I am a new player and looking to find a place to play. I need to buy everything, so what do you recommend in a gun? I am looking at Kart M14 JAE, what do you think of this for a starter.

Hi Eric,

Your first step is to get Age Verified - you'll then have access to the rest of the site where there are lots of discussion about starting kit / AEGs as well as our own classifieds for all your gear.

RE: New Player
I have owned 4 M14 AEG's over the years including a KART EBR. I have to say its pretty poor quality compared to a TM or G&P but upgradable. Since its TM compatible there are a lot of parts available. One thing to note is it has a pretty poor hopup unit out of the box so you may get much improved range and accuracy from a new hopup unit (G&P are easy to find from Asia) and a tightbore inner barrel.

One major issue I had with my EBR was the outer barrel had an inner diameter too small for normal barrels and had to be replaced. The stock inner barrel had thinner walls than a normal inner barrel and they made the outer to match. This meant I had to buy a new outer barrel to fit an aftermarket inner.

The TM M14 design is, in my opinion, one of the best if not THE best AEG design in existence. A good TM or G&P hopup is designed so well it can easily and noticeably outrange people shooting the same fps as you. They also run forever with next to no maintenance and can reliably shoot 500+ fps (though local limits are 400fps.)

A KART M14 isn't the best but it has potential.

I've always loved the JAE stocks and was considering getting one for my real steel M14 until I found out they are $2500+

Oh, and welcome to OVA.

RE: New Player
no retailers that i know of sell kart M14s in canada (please dont link it here), if your looking at retailers outside of canada, dont bother ordering, it has a slim to no chance of making it across the boarder. airsoft guns are replica firearms and prohibited items, unless they meet some specific requirements which most retailers in canada meet when importing their stock.

if your looking at an m14, go with something like echo1, or try and find a used TM or G&P on the classifieds. try to avoid the G&G and CA M14s, proprietary parts and magazines make them a less desirable gun, though not neccicarily a bad gun its just harder to find parts if something breaks. with the echo1 its TM compatible, and you can do almost what you will in terms of upgrades.

This. Its important.

G&G has such a poor hopup unit you can tighten it until your rubber tears; there is nothing stopping you from doing it accidentally.

The CA is by far the hardest to find parts for if you can at all.

Both CA and G&G have no aftermarket part support so you are stuck with stock parts. Their design is inferior to the TM design (cloned by ECHO1, KART, G&P, and others) in terms of reliability, accuracy, and practically everything else. The G&G is easier to work on/upgrade and has a stronger mechbox but poor performance that is easy to work on is still poor performance and unless you are going for 700+ fps the stronger mechbox is pointless.

RE: New Player
There are no airsoft-specific stores in Ottawa, pretty much all the purchasing is done online. Unfortunately per our board rules, links to sites that sell guns are not allowed outside of the Age Verified sections - so get yourself AV'd and there are lots of resources available to help you make a choice.

welcome to the forums.
If you don't have Kit you can rent at first.
I rent for $25.
307 is $25, I believe.
I can not remember what the LZ's rental fee is.

RE: New Player
The G&G max m14 is already pre upgraded by g&g with all their higher end upgrade parts, the only thing that may fail (and all AEG pistons do eventually ) is the piston. The internals are a mishmash of various other AEG parts, barrel/hopup/cylinder/nozzle are all from an AUG I believe.

The only reason I will not recommend it however is the mags ARE hard to find since they are not TM compatible (and expensive), and the stock is prone to cracking since the gun is so long and there's a lot of leverage on the cheaper abs plastic.

It's also HEAVY. it's about 2-3 pounds heavier than an M4, that wears on you over the course of the day.

G&G m14= Easier to find the gun in canada, harder to find support.

TM m14 = harder to find the gun in canada, easier to find support.

Age verification can help with that, but personally, I still see the g&g as an easier to get gun if you can deal with the quirks of owning one.

Also, if you want to start playing cheaply, an m4 is a better way to start, mags and mag pouches are a lot cheaper, there are preconfigured vests you can get to start that have pouches that fit, you can buy cheap surplus... whereas the m14 mags are larger and don't fit in anything but m14 mag pouches on separate molle pockets. Putting together your own molle rig is by far more expensive than a premade vest for a specific gun.

Look at your over all budget and future of what you will need to kit out before deciding on a specific gun. That was something I did not realize or plan for when I started last year.

RE: New Player
The G&G M14 gets no where near the range, accuracy, or fps consistency as the TM. I have used both in games and the TM is the hands down winner. Also no cheap broken stocks.

G&G factory "upgrade" parts are still not even close to the quality of good Japanese upgrade parts. Buy from brands like Prometheus and SystemA or the better Hong Kong brands like HurricanE and Guarder and you are a LOT better off than anything G&G offers.

Also good pistons don't fail for many MANY rounds. The TM M14 I had running a Prometheus hard type ver.7 piston lasted over 50,000 rounds (4 years of use by 3 different players) at 450fps (semi only sniper) and when I took it apart it almost looked new.

A friends stock TM piston in his 390-410fps G36K has lasted in excess of 75,000 rounds (5+ years of use) at 24rps and is barely worn.

Thank you for all the help. I think it would be best to keep it smiple as I am new. I have, checked out m4 and mp5. There is alot more support for them and would be eaiser to gef
