Dragon Skin
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the Canadian military's policy is regarding Dragon Skin body armour?

I heard that the US military refuse to issue it to soldiers for bizarre reasons (corporate monopoly in body armour industry).

RE: Dragon Skin
What I heard about US policy was that it was considered unfit for high heat environments like a desert because of some screw up with the glue used in a prototype that was tested by the army. They ended up falling apart when shot in desert like conditions or some such, I don't remember the exact details. The vests they tested didn't use the same glue to put the disks together that the production vests do for some reason. The demo vests sent to the army for display purposes ended up being used for life fire tests they where never designed for or something like that.

Its not just that they wont issue it since they wouldn't due to the price anyway. The big thing is they where (no idea if they still are since I heard this a couple years back) refusing to pay out life insurance to next of kin for anyone killed while wearing dragon skin.

To prove the effectiveness of dragon skin the US politicians that go to the middle east for visiting the troops and such are given dragon skin and I think the secret service also uses it.

Though dragon skin gives longer lasting protection against multiple hits it still suffers from the same problem as SAPI plates; it wont stop a high power rifle round. The 7.62x39mm round as well as 5.56NATO are considered medium power cartridges and both vests can stop those most of the time I believe. Neither can effectively stop 7.62NATO or 7.62x54R (Mosin Nagant, Dragonov, etc.) rounds which even on the "high power" rifle spectrum are on the lower end.

RE: Dragon Skin
With the number of budget cuts that the Conservative government is making at the moment, I doubt they could even afford new pencils...Canada is no longer in an active combat role (just pulled out the last of the troops protecting the Timmies in Afghanistan), so it doesn't seem like it would be very high on the to-do list. Although with the downtime from active combat, maybe they'll have time to test things out, and implement new gear for our troops.

Not sure what the official word is on it though.

RE: Dragon Skin
There is no policy on dragon skin. We wear sapi plates that is all. Untill a giant overly expensive replacement program comes in to replace them that is.
