The original came out long, long before nyan cat, I am a member on the japanese video site it debuted on... also I follow indie artists that use the software used to make it. It made the weekly top 30 song releases in july 2010, not sure how long it was up there, I didn't pay too much attention to it at the time. The meme on the japanese video site was more along the lines of karaoke divas singing the song, when it hit youtube, that's when people started looping other stuff to it, then eventually the poptart cat.
