Tips on avoiding friendly fire (as we all know it is not that friendly).![[Image: main.jpg]](http://www.army-technology.com/features/feature_images/feature41279/main.jpg)
- In order to prevent friendly fire, always ID the target first, and then shoot after. It can be hard to ID targets at times, and the only sure way you will know if that is friend or foe,is when he turns and fires at you or they/you gets closer,so until your sure who he is,keep your crosshairs on him and ready to fire on a seconds notice, but do not fire until the target is known as friendly or foe. Also, let others know what you see and the fact you do not know if it's friendly or not,so others don't shoot right away, and they can help identify the target in question. With more eyes on the target in question, the odds of identifying the target increase as well as the ability to drop him dead if it is a hostile and he turns around suddenly and fires at you.
- Communication is what reduces friendly fire.Everyone should have a good understanding of where friendlies are, where they are moving to,and in intense moments when the fight is on and everything happens within seconds, people should be aware of what the front lines are,and where your squad mates are shooting from and to,so you don't wander into the crossfire and get killed(STHud helps a lot for that because we cannot look around with great ease and accuracy like in RL).
- When there is more than one friendly squad out in the field,it's always a good idea to communicate with each other to understand where the other friendlies are to further avoid friendly fire. With every individual understanding where the friendly squads are,it makes Identifying areas that pose a threat easier and increases your battlefield awareness. If your squad is moving North, and the info has been past that the other friendly squad is moving North also but on your Eastern flank, about 150 meters out, you will know right away that if you see some movement to your East, about 150 meters out, there's a very good chance it is friendly and you need not worry. Also as both squads move North,if you see something move on your Western flank, about 150 meters out,you will know right away there is a good chance that is a Hostile force and you can prepare yourself without confusion of what is friend or foe and lose precious seconds verifying friendly positions. This is also why you should never stray from your squad, because if you wander in to another location where there are no reports of friendlies being in that sector, you just might get shot by a friendly,so stay with your squad to avoid such scenarios.
- When moving into friendly occupied space, such as buildings, compounds or specific terrain areas Hills, ditch's,forest's and so on,announce that your coming in so friendlies don't accidentally shoot you thinking it's an enemy that suddenly got the jump on them. You can say your name and "friendly coming in" a few times or "hold fire friendly moving in"and say the direction you are approaching from, whether it be N, E, S, W.When moving to a friendly location as reinforcements,it's always a good idea to communicate with them on the radio(if you got one), from which direction you are approaching from and how far out you are as well as how many people are with you.
- If you ID a friendly/friendlies,let your squad know where the friendly/friendlies are located.Say something like "Friendly\Friendlies at 11 o'clock" or " Friendly\Friendlies bearing 260".Give a distance report if needed or reference an obvious object that's near the Friendly\Friendlies position,so all can see and understand quickly where their allies are.
- IMPORTANTThis next point I feel cannot be expressed enough and is VERY IMPORTANT,in order to prevent close range friendly fire,ALWAYS,ALWAYS GO BEHIND THE GUN and NEVER TO IT'S FRONT.In other words, when your in a fire fight and you need to move, when you move, move on the BACKSIDE of your squad mates and NEVER the front side.If you move across your teammates front side, you are putting yourself in the cross fire and you prevent friendlies from shooting the enemy,or even worse, you make a friendly shoot you.If you occupy the right flank in a firefight and you need to shift to the left flank for example, and you have a friendly man that's on your left but 5-10 meters back, pull back 5-10 meters and travel BEHIND him, around his BACKSIDE,BEHIND HIS WEAPON,so that he does not shoot you,and so that you do not prevent him from firing at the enemy.NEVER EVER pass in front of peoples weapons in a fire fight.Always go BEHIND,even if you have to do a little detour,do it.This is a golden rule that should be remembered and practiced,it's VERY IMPORTANT that people remember this rule for their individual movements around the battlefield.
- With that being said, when chaos arrives and you find yourself in a firefight and people are moving all over the place in an intense shoot out, there will come a time where you have no choice really, but to pass in front of your friendlies weapon. This situation as stated, should try to be avoided at all cost's in all situations and be kept as an extremely rare occurrence, but if in some mad minute of intensity you need to pass in front of a friendly soldiers weapon, announce that you are going to pass in front of them so they can hold fire, and if you need to pass in front of the weapon, always be as quick as you can about it.If you know who that person is that you are about to run in front of,say their name so they know that you are running specifically across their lane of fire and get across their field of fire as fast as you can.
