OVA Forum Rules
Welcome to the Ottawa Valley's discussion board for airsoft players in the region! We welcome any player to join the forums and contribute information where ever they can to improve the experience for all the users.

The following are the OVA forum rules, they are policed well. They are intended to keep the forums clean, useful, and informative. Please read them before posting to save yourself from any problems you may encounter.

1) Be respectful of other users.
If you respect the other members, they will respect you. Being polite, and kind to those on the board goes a long way to creating a positive image for yourself. When asking a question, almost every member of the board is willing to help you with any problem you may have. However, please do not abuse their kindness by asking questions without first doing some research on the topic. If you ask something which can easily by answered with a bit of reading, you may not get a polite response. Make frequent use of the information and FAQ sections.

2) Avoid hateful language, racial slurs, or excessive profanity.
This should go without saying. Using any of the above mentioned things only makes you appear immature and disrespectful. Failure to comply with this simple rule may result in removal from the board.

3) Use descriptive titles, and follow the title formats where specified.
It can be very difficult and distracting to see a board full of topics entitled, “Look Here” or “Here’s my question”. Please make your topic title as DESCRIPTIVE as possible. This aids in clarity, and will go a long way to creating a positive image of yourself on the board. In addition, some forums such as the classified section have a specific way to title your post. Please follow the formats. Stick to these rules, and your post will have a long life on the board.

4) Keep Off-Topic posts to the off-topic sections.
This is Ottawa Valley Airsoft. As such, we try to keep topics related to airsoft. If you want to post something unrelated to airsoft, please post it in the off topic sections.

5) Improper Links, Photos and Videos.
There is to be no posting or linking to photographs or videos of people being killed, or the dead bodies of people whether they are combatants in a war or not. Additionally there will be no posting of pornographic images. This will usually be considered a major offence.

6) Drop the attitude.
There has been an unsettling trend as of late on OVA for members to think they are the saving grace of airsoft. Just because someone's ideas differ from yours does not make them wrong. It's worth your while to listen to what they have to say.

7) Multiple accounts.
If you have more then one account it will get you banned.

10) Necro posting
Do not raise an old thread without adding valuable or pertinent information.

11) Cross posting
Do not cross post the same post/thread in multiple locations. One is enough.

12) Trolling
Is the purposeful posting of false, useless, and/or inflammatory remarks to incite discord or unrest in the board or its operation. Whether posts constitute trolling is a decision for administration.

13) No sales of NAR items on the forum
Please do not post Non Airsoft Related (NAR) items up for sale on the forum. Many other websites designed to sell your items exist, please take advantage of them.

----

PLEASE REPORT issue posts/threads: Turns out we mods don't read every post that everyone makes. If people see an issue then REPORT it with the report function you will see at the bottom right side of a post.

Minor Offence

Definition - Minor offences include things such as mistitling posts, NAR (Not airsoft related) posts, insulting users or user prices, excessive post bumping, rude behaviour and general disrespect of the board's members. They are not limited to those listed.

Response - In general, this is up to the moderators viewing your post and has a LOT to do with your previous conduct on the board. They may warn you publicly or privately. In addition, they have the ability to formally register that offence with the administration.

Major Offence

Definition - Major offences are such things as fraud, racial bigotry, trolling, attempting to sell illegal items, and any minor offence after a formal registration. They are not limited to those listed.

Response - If a major offence is formally reported, several options are available.
1) Removal of posting privileges for a time designated by administration according to the severity of the offence (Muting).
2) A temporary ban for a time designated by administration according to the severity of the offence.
3) A permanent ban from OVA Forums.

*NOTE*
Please remember that although this forum is open to the public, it is owned and paid for by an individual. It is private property, and the administration reserves the right to take any of the above actions as they deem necessary.
Additionally, you may notice that these rules, with some additions and omissions, are almost word for word the same rules used on ASC. That is because their rules work.

I would have thought this would go without saying, but apparently not. If a member of the OVA staff tells you not to do something on the boards, you have two choices. 1. Don't do it. 2. Talk to the staff member about it.

If you are given a warning, and believe it is unjustified, your first action should be to contact the person who gave you the warning. If they are not willing to discuss it with you, you may contact any other staff member, explaining the situation. You should not just do it again, claiming that "it's not against the rules so I'm going to do it anyway". This will not lead to a solution, only to further confrontation.

OVA Infraction System
Greetings OVA,

Your mod staff is hard at work. Our first step is revamping the board warning system. I am sure most of you are unaware of what the warning systems is or how it breaks down.

Quote:Warning Type: Points / Expires After

Avoid hateful language, racial slurs, or excessive profanity: 4 / 12 Months
Be respectful of other users : 1 / 3 Months
Do not cross post : 1 / 3 Weeks
Do not necro post. : 1 / 3 Weeks
Do not troll/flamebait. : 4 / 12 Months
Drop the attitude. : 2 / 3 Months
Early bumping of a classified ad : 1 / 1 Months
Improper Links, Photos and Videos. : 4 / Never
Keep Off-Topic posts to the off-topic sections. : 1 / 3 Weeks
No posting of guns or 18+ items outside of specified areas ; 3 / 12 Months
Removing information from a classified ad : 1 / 1 Months
Use descriptive titles, and follow the title formats where specified. : 1 / 1 Months

The next important thing to know is what happens as you accumulate infractions.

Once a user receives 5 points (50% infraction level) that users posts will be set for moderation for a period of 2 weeks

At 7 points (70% infraction level) the users posting privileges will be suspended for 3 weeks.

At 10 points (100% infraction level) the user will be given a permanent ban from OVA.

We want to point out that if you receive an infraction from a staff member and feel its unwarranted you are to contact THAT staff member first. If you still feel that the matter needs further attention, please contact any other staff member and voice your concern.

RE: OVA Infraction System
Not that I have had any infractions or negative interactions with moderation staff (I read a lot more than I post) but what's with the rule requiring people to stay on topic or get the thread locked?

Does this make OVA a better place to discuss airsoft? I don't think it does... conversations are fluid and arrive at interesting places often by indirect routes. Insisting people make a new thread if they want to continue usually just kills the conversation anyway; nobody wants to have to make a new post summarizing the previous thread and present status of the discussion or anything silly like that. Why do we have to kill the natural flow of discussion? Besides, who cares anyway if a discussion changes topic from the thread title if it's still interesting and relevant to the people having it?

anyone looking for information in a thread will have to sort thought all the crap that doesn't belong there, just to find what they are looking for
